Abstract

|
Objectives: This is an explanatory correlational study to identify the relationship among perceived parental rearing attitude, attachment, children’s stress coping styles, and maladjustment behaviors in school- age children.
Methods: Data were collected from 406 students in grades 5 or 6 who understood the purpose of the study and agreed to participate. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS 12.0.
Results: There were significant differences in maladjustment behaviors between upper 25% and lower 25 group of parental warmth/acceptance & rejection/restriction rearing attitude, mother permissiveness/nonintervention rearing attitude and parental attachment. Result from the multiple regression analysis revealed difference in the related factors and in the magnitude of the relationship evaluated by the standardized beta coefficients. Significant factors, listed by the magnitude of beta coefficients, were father rejection/ restriction rearing attitude, sense of alienation in maternal attachment, father warmth/ acceptance rearing attitude and passive coping styles. These variables accounted for 39.5% of maladjustment behaviors.
Conclusion: These results may contribute to a better understanding of maladjustment behaviors in school-age children. For the effective management and prevention of schoolaged children’s maladjustment behaviors, programs including familial factor and stress coping styles should be established. Further research is necessary in order to draw consensus on roles of the related factors of maladjustment behaviors.
